Return to Learn Update

Dear Families,

On July 21st, during our regularly scheduled Board meeting, the Board of Education discussed the recently disseminated CDC guidance for the return to school this fall. Paired with this guidance were proposed district positions on each of the key mitigations, including masking and COVID-19 testing. The Board of Education and administration listened to public comment from members of our parent community in attendance. In addition, letters from our community sent to the Board and/or Superintendent were read in advance of the meeting. We recognize we have families with differing viewpoints on these topics and these were informative in our process.

Below is a link to the slide deck presented at the BOE meeting, with District 68 positions on mitigations that have been endorsed by the Board of Education.

Regarding the mitigation of masking, District 68 has adopted the CDC guidance on mask-wearing and will strongly recommend masking for unvaccinated students. However, the district will not take a more stringent position on masking than the CDC at this time -- and will not mandate masking for students. Unvaccinated adults are required to mask or show proof of vaccination if it is their choice to unmask. Again, further details are included in the attached presentation.

PLEASE NOTE: Local health conditions in our community and/or guidance from CDC and IDPH could change prior to the start of the school year. If that is the case, our administration will review new data and guidance and make any adjustments necessary.

Our school administrators are working through additional details parents need to know prior to the start of school. Another webinar for families will be distributed in early August. We are expecting further guidance from IDPH in the next week regarding quarantining, testing and addressing close contacts. These details will also be included in our next webinar.

This is undoubtedly a challenging time for school communities as we navigate difficult decisions. I thank you for your patience and understanding.

Regards,

Allison Sherman
