This year, our administration was made aware of a significant number of staff who requested an absence to observe their religious holiday on April 1. Exercising this day of absence is allowable for staff per Board policy and our Collective Bargaining Agreement. Over the last several weeks, the administration, Board of Education, and Oak Grove Education Association leadership collaborated around how to accommodate these requests, while also holding school within a safe and productive learning environment.
Several data points were considered and on Tuesday evening, the Board of Education publicly discussed the implications of holding school on a day with a significant staff shortage. If you are interested in viewing this discussion, please refer to time stamp 1:19:35 of the Board meeting recording on our website The thoughtful discussion resulted in the Board's decision to amend the calendar -- making April 1 a non-attendance day for staff and students, and adding June 3 as an attendance day, making this our current last day of school. This day will be an early release, with students dismissed at 1 pm.
Extended Care (from 7 am to 6 pm ) will be available to interested families on April 1. Please visit the Extended Day Program link on our website, under the Parents tab to register by Friday, March 22. Questions about the program can be directed to Rob Rendon at rendon@ogschool.org.
We know from the many discussions around the various preferences, this decision may be met with mixed feelings. The Board and administration want to reinforce that options were heard and thoughtfully considered from stakeholders and the decision is both student- and teacher-centered. The decision preserves a safe learning environment for students and also accommodates the absence requests of our teachers.
