Weekly Update - 10/03/2022

From the Principal’s Desk
Would you like to learn more about restorative practices and how the OGS staff handle behavioral situations? Please join us for October’s (in person) Talk Tuesday on October 25, 2022 from 6:00-7:30 PM. In order to plan for space and materials, please RSVP through THIS LINK by Friday, Oct. 21st.

Halloween at OGS
Students in Grades K-4 will enjoy traditional Halloween parties during the afternoon of October 31st. Due to the variance in grade level times for PE and rotations, students in Grades K-3 will enjoy the traditional Halloween Parade around the outside “track” of the OGS grounds starting at approximately 9:05 AM. Family members are welcome to watch!  In the case of inclement weather, we will plan a spontaneous parade inside the halls of OGS. If the event is moved inside, parents will need to sign-in through the front office starting at 8:45 AM and proceed to the PatPatt Gym to wait in the bleachers. For those unable to attend, the parade will be recorded and the link will be shared once it is ready to view.

Costumes
Students in Grades K-2 may wear their costumes to school.  Students in Grade 3 will start the day in PE and should dress appropriately.  The 3rd graders will put their costumes on at school after PE. If students want to switch into their regular clothes after the parade, they will need to bring their extra set of clothes to school (or have them on under their costumes). Please remember that students need to be mask-free and without weapons. Keep the masks and weapons at home for evening trick-or-treating. Face paint is allowed.

Reminder
Please complete the form for your Parent Teacher Conference preference through THIS LINK BY NOON ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2022.

Mental Health Minute
As we transition into the month of October, we’re looking to shift our focus on decision-making. This is a skill that we will be modeling for our students, integrating into our SEL curriculum, and recognizing through our Soaring Eagles! program. If you’d like some additional information or resources please review the October Mental Health Minute.

SEL Hub
We’re looking for members from the community! What is the SEL Hub? The SEL Hub is a collaborative partnership between the Oak Grove staff, community, and Lake County Regional Office of Education. Our goal is to identify the SEL needs of our school, develop action plans, and monitor their progress. We meet at least once a month from 3:30 to 4:30. If you’re interested, please contact Ryan Murray at murray@ogschool.org

The October meeting will focus on Restorative Practices. The session will discuss the meaning of restorative practice, the ongoing professional learning that our teachers are receiving and what these practices look like within our school and classrooms. We will have members of our Restorative Practice team present for the discussion.

Fall Placement Appeals-Reminder
Parents/guardians of students in grades 4-7 can request an additional review of student placement for consideration into Oak Grove’s talented and gifted (TAG) program for the 2022-23 school year. Families can appeal placement for a child in ELA and/or Math once per calendar year which is reviewed by the Advisory Council. This process is discussed on pages 11 and 12 of the TAG Handbook. To initiate an appeal, please complete the Parent Feedback form and email to Leslie Weber (weber@ogschool.org) and Alexa Dunn (adunn@ogschool.org) by this Friday, October 7. In completion of the form, please do not reference your child by name when providing examples and explanations. All student information is to remain anonymous when reviewed by the Advisory Council. Parents will be notified via email regarding the testing process and a final decision about placement made by the Advisory Council.
