Emergency School Closings
Oak Grove School may close or change its schedule in the case of severe weather, facility issues, or other emergencies. Decisions are made by the Superintendent, or in rare cases at the direction of the Governor of Illinois.
How You Will Be Notified
- BrightArrow phone call and email — sent by 5:30 AM when possible, so families can make arrangements.
- Oak Grove website — an announcement is posted on the OGS homepage.
- Local news outlets — closures are also shared through regional emergency-closing services.
Types of Schedule Changes
- Full-day closure — school is closed for the day. Depending on the circumstances, the day may be converted to a remote learning (e-learning) day, or designated as a traditional "snow day" with no instruction.
- Late start or early dismissal — less common, but possible if conditions develop before or during the school day. Follow BrightArrow and the website for updates.
Make Sure We Can Reach You
To receive closure notifications, your contact information in PowerSchool must be current, and you must be opted in to BrightArrow messages. See Make Sure You Get OGS Messages for email-whitelisting tips and text-message opt-in instructions.
Cold Weather Specifics
For our specific criteria around wind-chill warnings and advisories — including how they affect outdoor recess, after-school activities, and field trips — see our Severe Weather Response Plan.
Plan Ahead
We encourage all families to have alternative childcare arrangements ready in case school is closed on short notice. Winter-weather decisions are often made the morning of, because conditions change quickly in the Chicagoland area.
